# chrome-use in five minutes: let any agent use your own Chrome

Ask an agent to open a page and it often gets a brand-new browser: no cookies, no session, easy to flag as a bot. Copy the cookies over and many sites still notice a new device and ask you to verify again. So the agent stalls at the login, the captcha, the two-factor prompt, and the task stops halfway.

chrome-use lets an agent drive the Chrome you're already signed into. This video walks through it; the screenshots and terminal output in it are real.

## How it connects

The CLI talks to a small extension over native messaging, and the extension drives tabs through Chrome's own debugger API. No remote debugging port, no token, no network. The extension asks for 12 permissions, not access to every site, and after one install there is nothing to approve.

It is a plain command line, so Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or your own scripts can call it, and it also runs as an MCP server. How it differs from Playwright and friends: [Choosing a browser for your agent](/en/posts/chrome-use-vs-playwright-puppeteer-browser-use/).

## Your tabs stay yours

Agent tabs go into a separate window, one colored tab group per session, and it only closes the tabs it opened. It works in the background and never brings Chrome forward; when a page pops a new tab and Chrome jumps to the front, chrome-use puts your app back. Measured on macOS, Chrome stayed in front for 41 to 72 milliseconds.

Several agents can share one Chrome with isolated sessions: [Many agents, one real Chrome](/en/posts/chrome-use-multi-agent-one-real-chrome/).

## Safety and handoff

- Limit which domains the agent may visit; anything outside is refused.
- Make clicks, uploads or scripts wait for your approval; with no answer in 60 seconds they are denied.
- At a captcha or two-factor prompt it stops in your window. You finish that step and the agent carries on. Your password and codes never pass through the agent.

## Install

```sh
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/leeguooooo/chrome-use/main/install.sh | sh
```

Add the extension, run `chrome-use doctor`, and once all 16 checks pass you're ready. Code: [GitHub: leeguooooo/chrome-use](https://github.com/leeguooooo/chrome-use). The narration in the video is AI-generated.
